HLTWHS005 - Conduct manual tasks safely

HLTWHS005 Conduct manual tasks safely, also known as manual handling training, is conducted at our Adelaide CBD training centre. The training centre is fully equipped with hoists, hospital beds, slide sheets and everything needed to demonstrate conducting manual tasks safely. With plenty of hands-on practice and practical examples, we aim to make this course informative, fun and enjoyable.

This course is specifically intended for nurses, health workers, university students, support workers and aged care workers who are working in hospitals and residential care settings. It is designed in accordance with the relevant state/territory legislation including the Hazardous manual tasks code of practice.

Pre-requisites

There are no pre-requisites for this course.

Pre-reading and assessment

Prior to attending the face-to-face training and assessment, you will be required to complete the pre-course reading and, complete the questions in the knowledge workbook. The workbook must be printed, questions completed and , brought to the face- to- face session on the day.

The pre-reading and workbook are emailed at the time of booking. The readings and workbook are a self-paced, self-directed, and mandatory component of the course.

The actual number of study hours required for each learner to complete the assessment varies depending on the learners existing knowledge, skills and experience.

Course Content

The face-to-face training and assessment is a four-hour, hands-on course delivered at our CBD training centre (see below).

Adelaide CBD – Level 3/ 50 King William Street, Adelaide 5000

This course addresses the skills and knowledge required to recognise potentially hazardous manual tasks, and then to prepare for and complete those tasks in a safe manner. Whilst this course is specifically aimed at nurses, health workers, university students, support workers and aged care workers it applies to all workers involved in manual handling tasks and covers:

Identifying manual tasks that involve risk – You will learn how to recognise manual tasks that may involve risk to yourself or others; identify the risk factors that make the manual task hazardous; determine the nature and extent of the risk and follow organisation procedures for controlling hazardous manual tasks.

Preparing for manual tasks – You will understand how to prepare your workplace layout and environment according to organisation procedures; organise tasks and workflow appropriately; Prepare and package loads for movement; select and use personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate to the task and ensure the task is within your personal capabilities.

Completing manual tasks – You will learn how to use appropriate posture and handling techniques to reduce muscle load; select, adjust and use mechanical aids and handling devices according to manufacturer’s instructions and understand how to pace and schedule tasks according to procedures.

Contributing to safe work practices – You will learn how to Identify hazardous manual tasks and report them to your supervisor according to organisation procedures; follow organisation procedures for reporting symptoms of injury or actual injury to yourself or others; participate in workplace safety activities and contribute to the improvement of manual tasks and contribute to a risk management approach to reduce risks from manual tasks.

Award

Students who successfully complete this course will be awarded a Statement of Attainment for HTLWHS005 Conduct manual tasks safely. First Aid Pro aims to issue statements digitally via email, on the day that the training is successfully completed (subject to certain conditions). In order to issue your Statement, we need to have received your completed pre-course reading workbook and your verified USI (unique student identifier) before the course commences. Failure to provide this information may result in a delay in issuing your Statement.
